Roger Bannister (1929–2018) was a British middle-distance runner who became the first person to run a mile in under four minutes (Four-Minute Mile), completing it in 3:59.4 on May 6, 1954 at Oxford’s Iffley Road Track. Bannister’s running career was relatively short, as he retired from competitive athletics shortly after his historic achievement to focus on his medical career. He became a distinguished neurologist, while his athletic legacy continued to inspire generations of runners worldwide.
