This is a useful tool for our nervous system to manage stress and enhancing cognitive flexibility. The core insight is that visual attention directly modulates the autonomic nervous system — by deliberately shifting where and how we look, we can regulate our internal state in real time.
The exercise operates on a principle known as Space-Time Bridging 時空橋樑. When you shift your visual focus from near to far, you are simultaneously shifting your time perspective from the immediate present (fine/thin slicing) to the long view (coarse/thick slicing). This trains the brain to move fluidly between different timescales of awareness.
Steps
- Start with eyes closed, focusing on the internal state of body sensations like breathing and heart rate (Fine/Thin Time Slicing 高幀率)
- Then eyes open, focusing on the surface of one’s body.
- Gradually look further into the distance, expanding your perception from near to far, maybe 10 feet away.
- Then look at a location off to the horizon. Imagine yourself in a broader context, like viewing the whole world or the entire globe. (Coarse/Thick Time Slicing 低幀率)
- And then back to one’s immediate surroundings by closing one’s eyes.

Tools
- Overt Visual Focus: physically focus your visual attention on a specific point (or “spotlight”) will help maintain focus during bouts of goal work.
- Covert Visual Focus: focus your eyes on one location, such as a pen, but direct your focus elsewhere in the room or location that you’re in.

- When feeling stuck or tunnel-visioned: Expand your visual attention to panoramic mode. This often unlocks creative solutions by shifting from narrow problem-solving to broad perspective-taking.
- During deep work sessions: Use overt visual focus as a concentration anchor — fix your gaze on a single spot to prevent mental drift.
- Before sleep: The reverse direction (panoramic → near → internal) can help down-regulate the nervous system for rest.
